Project Overview

The Lexington Avenue Corridor is a Vision Zero* project, that aims to improve the pedestrian network in the area by increasing safety and providing equitable mobility for all users. It entails the design and construction of seven curb and sidewalk extensions along the east side of Lexington Avenue between East 41st and East 48th Streets, on the blocks surrounding Grand Central Terminal. The other major component of this project is the replacement of underground water utility lines on Lexington Avenue within the project area.

*Vision Zero is a strategy to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries, while increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all.

Upcoming Work​ 

 

  • Upcoming work for the week of December 9-13, 2024 will include  excavation of the roadway for utility work on the west side of Lexington Avenue between East 45th and East 46th Streets, resulting in elevated noise levels. 

  • Upcoming work for the week of December 2-6, 2024 will include mobilization of equipment, sawcutting, and pre-excavation of the roadway resulting in elevated noise levels.

  • There will be temporary bus stop relocations beginning on/about Wednesday November 20th until further notice. The bus stop relocations will be along Lexington Ave. E. 46th Street/ Lexington Ave. M101, M102, M103 and SIM6, SIM11, SIM22, and SIM26. Due to construction both bus stops will be relocated to the Southwest corner of E. 45th Street/Lexington Ave. Signs will be posted.

  • There will be a no-parking restriction on Monday, November 18th, 2024, starting at 7:00PM, until further notice, along Lexington between East 45th and East 47th Streets (both sides).  Field and weather conditions permitting, parking restrictions will go into effect 24/7. Construction Barrels and signage will be posted. One bus lane and two traffic lanes will remain open. 

  • Work operations will commence at Lexington Avenue from East 45th Street to East 47th Street (west side) on/about Thursday November 21, 2024, from 7:00 PM to 3:00 AM for the mobilization of equipment and set up of barricades. The general contractor will begin excavations to determine the locations of underground structures and utilities starting on Wednesday, November 25, 2024, with the work hours of 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Business/Pedestrian access will remain open during construction activities.                            

  • There will be a temporary test water main test shutdown Friday, October 11, 2024 12:01AM to 4:00AM approximately 4 hours at the following locations: East 45th Street between Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue, and East 45th Street between Lexington Avenue and Madison Avenue.

  • There will be a temporary water main test shutdown Friday, September 13, 2024 12:01AM to 4:00AM approximately 4 hours at the following locations: East 46th Street between Lexington Avenue and Park Avenue, East 46th Street between Lexington Avenue and 3rd Avenue, and East 46th Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue.

  • There will be a temporary water main test shutdown Friday, July 19, 2024 12:01AM to 4:00AM approximately 4 hours at the following locations: Lexington Avenue between East 48th Street and East 50th Street, East 50th Street between Lexington Avenue and Park Avenue, and East 47th Street between Lexington Avenue and 3rd Avenue.

  • There will be a temporary water main test shutdown Friday, June 28, 2024 12:01AM to 4:00AM approximately 4 hours at the following locations: East 48th Street between Lexington Avenue to 3rd Avenue, 3rd Avenue between East 48th Street to East 50th Street.

  • There will be a temporary water main test shutdown Wednesday, June 12, 2024 12:01AM to 4:00AM approximately 4 hours at the following locations: East 49th Street between Lexington Avenue to 3rd Avenue, East 49th Street between Lexington Avenue to Park Avenue, East 49th Street between Park Avenue to Madison Avenue.

  • There will be utility test pits and no curbside parking on East 49th Street between Lexington to 3rd Avenues, starting on Wednesday, May 29, 2024, lasting for or approximately two weeks.

  • A temporary storage area will be installed on the East Side of Lexington Avenue between East 47th and East 45th Street, beginning 03/12/2024. 

  • There will be a night-time one-lane closure on Lexington Avenue from East 49th Street to East 45th Street and Intersection of Lexington Avenue and East 41st Street. Beginning On Monday, 3/11/24, from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM for approximately 4 weeks.

  •  A temporary one-lane closure for vehicular traffic is confirmed for Friday night, 03/08/24, through Saturday morning, 03/09/24, from 09:00 p.m. to 05:00 a.m. for Lexington Avenue between East 46th Street and East 45th Street.

  • A temporary one-lane closure for vehicular traffic is confirmed for Wednesday night,  03/06/24, through Thursday morning, 03/07/24, from 09:00 p.m. to 07:00 a.m for the following locations:  Lexington Avenue between East 47th and 45th Street, Lexington Avenue and E. 41st Street. 

  • The project team will be on site for field sampling operations on Monday night, 03/04/24, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM starting from the intersection of Lexington Avenue and East 49th Street.
